These works, which look like steel sheets, studded with rivets, are, in fact, made out of resin. To make them, the process was incredibly physical. I mention this because the physical energy bound up within each work gives greater emphasis to my intention that these works stand as metaphors for mankind. During the process of making, as the resin cured, I manipulated areas to give the impression of warped, buckling, rusty metal. I wanted these works, through their warped, gnarled surfaces to reference the passage of time and metaphorically speak of the trials and tribulations, “the scars”, each one of us accumulate on our journey through life. In contrast, the use of Swarovski crystals on the signs and lettering, is intended to speak of the superficial façade, the shimmering illusory surface, which so often seeks to conceal the truth. And yet despite their shimmering presence the “scars” accumulated, both negative and positive, are not concealed but are here instead laid, vulnerably, bare. Whilst being reminded nothing is ever as it seems we are also encouraged to lay our flaws bare and in so doing to celebrate the very things that make us the authentic people we are.
