When in LA for the first time I spent many days pounding the streets. I always do this when I go somewhere for the first time. It’s a “hunger” I have to “feast” my eyes on new sites. In LA I remember being struck by the presence of nature in and around the concrete spaghetti highways and junctions. Nature was evident at every turn, whether the mountains on one side, the coast to the other or majestic palm trees along the highways. Yet it was the coastal area near the basketball courts on the board walk which resonated and, for me, highlighted man’s relationship with nature. With this painting my intention was to speak of man’s infiltration into nature and to subsequently question, perhaps even warn, of the harmony or disharmony of this particular relationship.
